Is Happiness a Choice and a Skill?

Even though you are blessed with a fortunate life, do you long for a deeper sense of happiness, peace, and connection?

Are you overwhelmed, stressed, running (late) from task to task?

Is burnout just around the corner for you?

Maybe it’s time to change your inner direction, to move into greater satisfaction and well-being.

Dr Usui, founder of Reiki, introduced the five Reiki precepts, they are guidelines that everyone can live by, to promote a healthy, loving way of living. Irrelevant whether or not you practice Reiki.

You might be familiar with the Reiki Precepts — Just for today — but have you unlocked their power to regain your happiness moment by moment, in the middle of your day, or the middle of a crisis? Are you able to engage them and feel their support when you most need it?

Happiness is a choice, and a skill

The Precepts are the bridge between how you experience your life and how you want to experience it.

Happiness, steady happiness, isn’t a luxury, or a carrot on a stick. It is both a choice, and the skill to be able to make that choice.

Abiding happiness doesn’t just happen. It doesn’t magically appear. Happiness isn’t in your future unless you learn how to be happy.

Your body constantly responds to your emotional state. Stress and depression damage your health and influence your choices in ways you might not recognize, making it harder and harder to choose to be happy.

Happiness is a necessity

Happiness is essential to health and well-being, and it is your true nature.

You are happiest when you are yourself. When you are happy, you make good choices that help you stay that way. And happiness enables you to function at your highest capacity, to bring your best self, and greatest creativity, to each moment of every day.

Happiness is contagious. When you are happy, you inspire the people around you to be happy — both the people you love and even those other people who would be so much easier to be around if you were happier and knew how to stay happier!

Your happiness will not improve until you make it a priority. Even if you were magically infused with happiness, you still need to know how to maintain it.

Now is the time to take control of your happiness.

1. Just for today, I release thoughts of worry

When we worry, we forget that there is a divine purpose to everything. Worrying causes us stress and tension. We are projecting into the future and not living in the present moment.

"Just for today" means exactly that. We do not give ourselves big goals of "I will never worry again". That would be unrealistic. What we do promise to ourselves, is living in the present moment and allowing ourselves to experience the richness of "just today" without worry and stress.

If you find yourself worrying, gently remind yourself to let go of the worry just for today. Making small baby steps we open up opportunities for ourselves to experience joy, freedom, and peace. With practice, you will experience positive emotions more often.

2. Just for today, I release angry thoughts and feelings

Anger is a challenging emotion for many of us. We live in a fast paced world and there are many times throughout the day when we feel triggered, stressed, frustrated and angry.

How do we deal with this? Do we deny our feelings and pretend we are not angry?

No. You do not have to deny your reality and push away your feelings. Acknowledge your anger. Witness it. And let it transform.

Anger is an emotion. E-motion = Energy in motion. It can transform. When you acknowledge and witness your anger, when you allow the energy to transform, you invite love and compassion.

Just for today means again, focusing on the present day, not projecting too much into the future. Anger is more manageable if we think of the present day.

3. Just for today, I will be grateful

We are always asking for more and only seeing what we don't have. Let's try for one day to be grateful for what we do have — like a job, a car that takes you where you need to go, a roof over your head, good health and a family that loves you unconditionally and supports you. When we are grateful for what we have, we will attract more good. The law of attraction states that like attracts like and lack attracts lack, so stay positive and be grateful for what you have.

4. Just for today, I will do my work honestly

Doing your work honestly brings more purpose and meaning into your life. When you do your work honestly and with purpose, at the end of the day you'll feel good about yourself and more fulfilled about your work.

5. Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing

What you give out, you receive back tenfold. Be nice, loving and caring to everyone, even if it's not your favourite person in the world. We all deserve love and kindness. At the end of the day we will feel better about ourselves for bringing some light and love into someone else's day, even if it's just for a moment.

Kindness is so simple. When you are in a state of gratitude and kindness, you are connected to the wisdom of the Universe. You can feel the connection and Oneness.

When you show kindness and express gratitude to every living thing, you will begin to feel that everything is interconnected. You will lose the veil of separation, your ego will begin to dissipate and you will begin to consciously perceive the realm of spiritual dimensions.
